Rubbish Tuesday #24

I'm b-a-a-ck. I didn't turn the computer on while my visitors were here, so will try to  make the rounds and catch up soon.

Sonny Boy and Handsome lad have come and gone. It was a wonderful visit. We didn't get to do anything exciting, but we did spend a couple of days with Punky Doodle and the Punks. We also went to Springfield to the Lincoln Museum and house.
One of the Punks played a tune (sort of) on his vintage
Hohner Squeezebox.
This is the State Capitol building dome. We didn't have time for a tour. Hopefully next time. The building opened in 1868.

These are a couple of dresses, I assume were worn by Mrs. Lincoln, but I didn't have time to read the plaques. Sonny and Handsome practically ran through this exhibit.

After seeing Gone With the Wind for the first time, I remember wishing I could wear gowns like these. Now all I think is how uncomfortable they must have been.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will join in the fun.

My idea was to have a place to post 'old things'. Anything old
and/or deteriorating such as, but not limited to, old houses, barns, outbuildings, old cars, rusty things, antiques, interesting junk, or it can be something in pristine condition, but just old.

1. Link to a post featuring photos of something old.
2. Link back to Rubbish by Roan in your post.
3. As time allows, visit other participants and comment on their posts.

I look at those dresses/gowns and think how much work must have been involved. And all the yards of material needed for all those full skirts.

My Tootie is supposed to come today--had thought yesterday...but anyway, she will be here a while, so not going to join the fun since I won't have time to visit.

Glad you had a good time with the family! The dresses definitely look like they're from that time period.

I wonder if they have one of those dresses in my size? Tom The Backroads Traveller

Maybe those gowns and their corsets underneath are what made Mrs. Lincoln so cranky. ;-) these are beautiful images! Love that squeezebox.

Those dresses were quite fashionable in those days, and comfort was not part of it. Can you imagine wearing these dresses in summertime humidity? Love the street scene and all your images. Looks like a great day to spend with the family.

The gowns are so beautiful. When we traveled in Europe they told us tales of keeping insect repellents under the skirts to keep the bugs away. They sure are pretty on the outside!

I have heard that is why women used to faint, or take a case of "the vapours". It was because of the tight laced up corsets they wore under these dresses. There was even talk of having a lower rib removed, but hopefully it is just a myth.

Oh yes, I bet they are REALLY uncomfortable! Glad you had a great visit.

Oh my goodness...can you just imagine wearing dresses like this? They are beautiful but I do agree...they must have been very uncomfortable...especially all of that "hardware" underneath it all for sure :)

I love this tour and your shares. Isn't it just like young ones zipping through historical museums and often they're just so much uninterested?

Oh, I think you're right that those dresses were uncomfortable to wear!

Glad you had a great visit! So nice to have you back! Love the squeeze box and the dresses. I always love fancy dresses, from almost every period of history....even the costumes on stage in productions! :-) I'm such a sucker for that stuff. :-) But I'm the first one to grab my comfy casual clothes!

I would have been one of those belles on the fainting couch if I had to wear these costumes. Ugh! Glad you had a good visit with your family. :)

Those dresses are so pretty, but I agree that they must have been so uncomfortable to wear - corsets and such.

Love that squeeze box! Bill is of Hungarian descent. His brother played the accordion, squeeze box, concertina, and organ. Bill plays guitar. It was fun for them to play the oldies, including polkas!

Argh yes pretty uncomfortable, not to mention not very practical, but on the bright side rather gorgeous dresses with plenty of room for my hips!
Thanks you for hosting!
