I'm having a hard time remembering the name of this once busy grocery store. I know I know it, but I've given up. I'll probably wake up in the middle of the night and go, "Oh, yeah!"
When I was in the 1st and 2nd grade, we lived just down the road from this store. There is another across the road and I do remember it was called Wampler's. I know because I went to school with their grandson in Jurior High and through High School.
Regardless of the name, it is no more. I remember going into the store with my Aunt Edna after church on Sunday evening and she bought Dinty Moore Beef Stew and RC Colas to serve for dinner or, as it is still commonly referred to up here in farm country, supper.
Sadly, all the little mom and pop stores once scattered around the countryside are no more.
I remember many little country stores like that. We used to stop at one on the way to school sometimes.
ReplyDeleteOh I love that old store we had a store like that when I was a kid it was limestone and the floors were very crooked but it left wonderful memories and stories in my head much like yours. Great shot. Hug B
ReplyDeleteWe had a Mom and Pop store like that in the little Missouri town I grew up in. I remember my Mom going in to buy hamburger. I remember walking on the hardwood plank floors and I always got a Coke. They sold little button candies on a strip of paper!
ReplyDeleteAh, the memories a place like this evokes!
ReplyDeletewhat a great memory - and a great old store. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is an oldie but goodie alright.
ReplyDeleteNow people like to do one stop shopping instead of a special store for things like bread, cheese, meat... It's nice to have the memories though!
ReplyDeleteThat is a very sad sight, isn't it. We see so many buildings like that. But I bet there's a Walmart nearby.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a house. I bet it was a cool store back in the day!
ReplyDeleteIt is sad how the Wal-Marts and other chain stores have resulted in the demise of the mom-and-pop stores. I wish we could return to those days...
ReplyDeleteI miss the little mom and pop stores...our little town used to have 3 in it...and probably more than that before I moved here...but I miss them.
ReplyDeleteSo sad! At one time, it was someone's home, and not rubbish. Hi, I come from Rose.
ReplyDeleteRoan,
ReplyDeleteIt is sad to see the Mom and Pop stores go out of business. The ones still going are usually full of neat things and have lots of character.
Having those memories are so important to pass on. Great shot.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like it was also someone's home.
ReplyDeleteOur town had several of them, too. One of my hubby's friends converted an old neighborhood grocery store into two apartments back in the 70s. The last time we were by (a few years ago) it was still apartments even though our friend sold it long ago.

What a beautiful old house.
ReplyDeleteI love those evenings after church - no house chores and the food was always special; those country stores I used to go to with cousins to buy candies.
ReplyDeleteDuring the Depression, my mother's grandfather had a small grocery store. According to her, "We ate out of the store."
ReplyDeleteIt is always fun to see one of the old stores, even though it is sad to see them abandoned.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so sad. The Mom and Pop businesses are what America was founded upon. It is the end of an important era.
ReplyDeleteI remember a 'neighborhood store' also. Awwwwwwww, the good ol' days.
ReplyDeleteSo many fond memories of the small community store(s) and the people that owned them and how they looked out for us.
ReplyDeleteNice picture. I like the old mom and pop stores. It is sad to see them go.
ReplyDeletei love the stories you tell with your pictures...you made me think of a little market i used to walk to with my grandma. it was called meat packers in el cajon, ca. we lived around the corner from it, my grandma lived with us. when i was really young i remember a story about one of the cows getting out when they tried to butcher him (they kept cattle in the back of the market!) and supposedly he was running the streets. i don't know how much of it is true! i can still smell the inside of the old market, the meats, even though i haven't been in there in probably 30+ years! they tore it down years ago and it became a car dealership.
ReplyDeleteOld is gold! I love the old shop in the picture!
ReplyDeleteThe old grocery store that I used to go to is still there but is in terrible condition. I would love to see inside of it but the current owners live in the livable quarters at the rear and closed off the store part. So getting in would be a trip for them I suspect.
