I almost had an owl! We were driving down to Bro O's house to work in the garden. We always stop on a bridge to see if Mr. Heron is visiting the creek. No Heron, but a huge owl took off from the empty creek bed and flew up into the trees. Sadly, I wasn't fast enough to get his picture.
However, we did see this guy by O's pond. Kingbird or Phoebe? Tex?

1. When I look at the sky I feel..
in awe of the angry clouds before a storm and happy when laying on the ground looking up, picking out familiar shapes in the clouds. But mostly, the vastness makes me feel small.
2. If you had to run for political office, which one would you run for? Do you have any real desire to actually do this?
The answer would be Circuit Clerk of our county. This is an actual delimma I am facing now. My boss was the Circuit Clerk. Since she passed away, I have been appointed to the position. There will be an election in November and everyone expected me to run. I have declined. I am not a politician and have no desire to be one. There are few politicians who are really in it for the good of their community, state, or country. Most are in it for the money, power, and glory. Sad, but true.
3. What scent makes you think of home?
I can't think of any scent in particular that reminds me of my home today. I enjoy scented candles, but buy lots of different varieties. There is one scent that takes me back to my childhood home and that is apple pie baking. My mom's was the best.
4. How often do you take a step back to think about where you're headed in life? Do you need more or less self-reflection?
Not often, normally. Lately considering whether or not to run for Circuit Clerk has made me take a step back and consider the idea seriously. Of course, the decision was no way!
5. July is National Ice Cream Month...besides a cone, what's your favorite food item to top with ice cream?
Fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream. Yum!
6. What might your autobiography be called?
Life in Short. I have written about 150 short stories for my memoir. I'll probably add a few more and call it done.
7. Your least favorite mode of transportation? Why?
I would have to say a bus. I've never actually rode a bus anywhere, but daughter has. She was traveling from Dallas to Raleigh, NC where I lived at the time. She had to get off in Charlotte, NC because some weird guy wouldn't leave her alone. She got her luggage and hid in the ladies room until the bus left and then called me to come get her.
8. Insert your own random thought here.
Fergus is in serious need of a long walk. I've been at work and working late this week. Fergus has had to settle for a few throws of the ball and a frisbee toss or two. This morning he is standing on the bed behind me, his paws over the back of my office chair, and his chin is now resting atop my head. I think he is wanting some attention. What do you think? Guess I'll go for a walk before work. I'll be spending the day with the auditors. We are in the midst of our yearly review. Ugh!

Big as Owls are they are not easy to get a photo of .
I'll have to check back to see what someone says about the pretty gray bird! I agree with you about running for office.
Sadly I miss capturing birds with my camera ALL the time so I feel your pain about missing the owl. The bird in your photo is an Eastern Kingbird. Notice the white at the bottom of its tail.
Roan,
I worked the the State's Attorney Secretary at our Courthouse for over seven years. The Clerk of Courts I worked with was (and still is) very good. I had no idea you were a Clerk.
Scent that takes me home... cattle shows. I don't go to very many, but the smells and sounds remind me of growing up and family.
Ice cream ... my favorite! I make my own, blue berry is my stand by. Two weeks ago I had cherries to use up and that made a good flavor. Same story with peaches!
Yay for starting a memoir. Your children and grands will always have your voice with them in heart and writing.
Hope you and Fergus get a nice walk in together.
I'm not Tex, but I think this looks like an Eastern Kingbird perhaps....I see a white tail tip and that is a sure 'sign' of a kingbird.
There is an owl out in the woods that I hear quite often that I would love to get a shot of! Interesting hodgepodge questions...there's not much I like better than looking up to the clouds, stormy or not :) Have a good day!
oh how exciting to see an owl!! hope you get some time for fergus!
Oh, my goodness! Fergus sounds like our Bubbie. If we are busy and he is wanting attention he will raise up on us...only thing, he will 'nip' us in order to get some reaction.
I hope you get to capture the owl sometime!
Lovely bird, too bad you didn't get the owl but it is recorded in your memory. Fergus sounds like a character, hope he got his walk.
hard to say on that bird - agreeing with anni - the white-tipped tail is the giveaway of a kingbird, but some of those shots don't show it. hmmm...
i hope you and fergus get to go out soon!
I'm almost certain it's a Kingbird! The way his wings jut up around the top and the deep charcoal shade of the feathers with the white bars are definitely Kingbird.
Sorry you could not get a snapshot of the owl but the bird pics are very pretty.
I can picture Fergus hanging over the back of your chair! Hope you two had a chance to walk before your long day at work.
Great post, you'll get that owl one day. Fergus sounds very cute, like any child wanting attention when mum is busy. Enjoyed reading your Wednesday Hodgepodge.
From what I know of you, you would make a tremendous Circuit clerk. You would do your job for the right reasons and not for your own glory. Why not break the pattern and run? This is the only way we can get corrupt people out of office.
Don't feel too bad. I've never come close to photographing an owl.
I have seen owls but never seem to have a camera with me. I need a walk too but am too busy to do so these days. Great shots!
I've never seen an owl in the wild. How neat!
Sorry, the owl flew off. I do not see the white of the tail that the Kingbird has, this may be the Phoebe.
Have a great day!
I vote for King Bird, one of my favourites!
You'll catch that owl next time around! Great bird shots.
I am throwing in my vote for an Eastern Kingbird! Good Afternoon!
Cant help with the ID on the bird - too far off my patch. But its a nice looking one what ever it is!
Sorry for the much delayed reply - I've been in the UK for a month and I decided to let the blogging take a back seat - normal service will resume very soon!

Yes, so many birds, flying too fast, only capturing bird butts! I love them!
