Rubbish Tuesday #6

Yesterday on my ramble, I decided to drive to Mattoon, IL to see if I could find anything of interest. As I drove downtown on Broadway I remembered the old theater.
It was called Time Theater. I never questioned why until now. Since it is no longer a movie theater, guess we will never know.

The Time replaced the Grand Theater which burned down in 1938. It was rebuilt in Art Deco style and renamed Time Theater. What you see is the original building, still in great shape.

It stopped showing movies in the 1980s and was transformed into a concert venue/banquet hall in 2002. It closed down a couple of years later.
While taking pictures of Time Theater, I remembered the old Skyway Drive-in that used to be on the outskirts of town. It is now a concrete company, but low and behold, even though the screen and concession standa re long gone, the old sign is still there!

I think I need to clarify the Rubbish Tuesday blog hop. Some bloggers out there seem to think it is only for posting trash, which isn't correct. Although, trash is certainly welcome if it's old and that's your cup of tea. I named it Rubbish Tuesday specifically to encompass the name of this blog, Rubbish by Roan.  My idea was to have a place to post 'old things'.  Anything old and/or deteriorating such as old houses, barns, outbuildings, old cars, rusty things, antiques, interesting junk, or it can be something in pristine condition, but just old. The only criteria I'm looking for is 'old'. I guess I should have named it something else, but too late now. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. My address is under the Contact tab below my header. I hope you will join in the fun.

So fun that old sign is still there. I remember the first time I went to a drive in theater I was nearly eaten alive by mosquitoes. That was in northern Minnesota. I'll be linking in tomorrow.

Love the theater theme you got going here this week! How I remember drive-in theaters. Great way to see a movie and have little ones in the back seat sleeping and no babysitter fees. LOL

Yes, there is beauty in old things. But not always in the garbage can!

The Time Theater looks like the Family Theater in Mt. Morris New York.

The theater is classic looking, and very pretty. TIME has been good to it. Now, so many of the theaters are going to six and even eight screens.

Oh the music played when it was a concert venue!

My hubby and I frequent an old theater in downtown Galax, which is now host to the Blue Ridge Backroads radio broadcast...a live show recorded with audiences every Friday night. We have seen some awesome talent on that stage! I love these old theaters and think it's a shame when they tear them down...the drive-ins, as well :(

I am still on the road, taking pictures. I will rejoin in July, after I am home and can download my pictures! I love this meme and your pictures.

That art deco design certainly holds up well. It still looks so vibrant and colorful. Too bad it is no longer in use.

I love that they kept the sign at the rubble company. It's too bad so many of these old theaters have gone under, but I must admit I like the comforts of new movie theaters. :)

Nice theater! Love the red. And what a treat that the old drive in sign is still there. Someone knows what to keep! See you tomorrow.

Roan,
I really like the Time Movie theater picture. Have you played with editing it?

I bet the theater and drive in could tell some good stories.

We have an old theater downtown similar to that one and it's still in operation.

I love seeing the old buildings of the towns around here. Or anywhere I guess.

How neat that the old drive-in sign was not taken down!

What a great-looking old movie theatre - and how nice that the concrete factory has not tampered with the old Skyway sign.

Wonderful architecture in that first shot.

Beautiful art-deco structure and it is amazing that the old drive in sign was left to stand..at one time we had two downtown theaters that adjoined and they are now a very nice restaurant...

I love the Time Theatre. It's art deco look is beautiful, especially with that red, and the business next door added a red awning to help enhance the look. Lovely! I wonder why it was named that as well. I am going to try to join in to your meme some when I can. The sun devours anything old around here! :-)

We went to a winery in NC on the coast that was fascinating. They let you drive down between the fields and one could get photos of the grapevines, which is actually what I was hoping for that day. Oh well. :-) Perhaps one day I'll post my old pictures.

I am linking up once again for Rubbish Tuesday. I did not receive a comment from you last week when I linked. Two blog friends commented today and asked me to link up with you.
Your post today brings back fond memories from my childhood. These are awesome photos.
Hope you have a wonderful day.

Applause to the concrete factory for keeping the sign and not just concreting over it!
I'm a newbie here and have enjoyed participating - thank you!
