Rubbish Tuesday #11

This post is being scheduled. I will be working long hours and weekends. I will do my best to visit everyone soon.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will join in the fun.

My idea was to have a place to post 'old things'.  Anything old and/or deteriorating such as old houses, barns, outbuildings, old cars, rusty things, antiques, interesting junk, or it can be something in pristine condition, but just old.

Blue, Yellow, Black

Warning, may need your magnifier of choice. The first two shots were taken while we were parked on a bridge where we always look for a Blue Heron who once hung out in this spot.
 Indigo Bunting
 Goldfinch
And what would one of my bird posts be without a Red-winged Blackbird. Male.
Female. What the heck is she doing? Guess she had an itch.

Saturday Critters

I found these horses on my ramble down The River Road.
When I first saw these critters, they were both facing the road. As is always my luck, one turned around and gave me the moon.
In this shot, some smallish critter is being swished away by a tail.
I really like milkweed blooms. Seems this bumble bee does too. Have you ever used the milk to rid yourself of warts? It works. I have a tiny little wart on the palm of my right hand just below the ring finger. I rubbed milk weed on it and it disappeared for several years, but it is back now. I will be using some of that milk again this year.
Mr. Bumblebee seems to like this sunflower, too.
Thursday night as we drove up to the garden, we saw these juvenile wood ducks swimming on the far side of the pond. When they saw us, they took off.

I'm off to work. It's a sad place to be right now. My boss was my friend. More than that really. She felt like family. Her family lived near mine when we were growing up. Everyone loved her. The service will be held Wednesday. I can only imagine the number of people who will stop by to say their goodbyes. She was a bright light in many lives. She will be missed.

Hope your weekend is a good one.

Only the Good Die Young

Friend, family, and fearless leader. She will be missed.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Good Fences

I have posted this fence before, but drove by it again last Sunday.  It surrounds an old family graveyard and is very old. Probably late 1800s.

I want to apologize for not visiting much during the next several days. Our office is a 4 person office and our leader has been fighting a valiant battle with cancer for a lot of years. She is currently in intensive care with pneumonia. Which leaves me to work both of our desks. If you are of the persuasion, please say a prayer.

After last Sunday's ramble, on my way home I decided to drive through The Rez. Even though I hadn't seen any wildlife there in weeks, I am always hopeful. This time I got lucky! The water was really green. Hubs thinks it was treated for algae.

I think these are Juvenile Wood Ducks.

1. July is National Anti-Boredom Month. When was the last time you were bored? What's your go-to cure for boredom?

I found myself walking around the house alone last Sunday afternoon. Hubs was working. Dinner was planned and prepped as much as I could prep. I finished the book I was reading earlier in the day. I tried to write, but my muse must have taken the day off. So, I grabbed my camera, loaded Fergus in the car, and went for a ramble.

2. What's the last thing you made a reservation for?

That would probably have been dinner reservations when I still lived in Texas. I live in middle-of-nowhere Illinois. Diners don't take reservations. On second thought, probably hotel reservations.

3. What's one thing on your summer 'bucket list'? Any plans to make it happen?

I want to go to Hannibal, Missouri. I will need to have about 2 days off during the week so Hubs can go, too. He rarely gets a day off on the weekend. It will need to be spur of the moment. We can't really plan until Hubs gets his schedule. He rarely ever gets the same days off during the week. If that doesn't work out, I will take myself down to see my son.

4. What's your favorite summertime sip?

Iced Green Tea with lemon. No sugar.

5. What do you find is the best way to handle another person's hostility and hopefully ease the tension?

I practice avoidance. I don't have time for those kind of people.

6. Your favorite film set in summer?

Now this answer will age me, as if you haven't already figured out I'm older than dirt. A Summer Place with the dreamy Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee. Two of my favorite actors when I was a young 'un. Besides, I was madly in love with Troy. It was a risqué movie back then, which added to its appeal.

7. What word are you using too much lately?

Funny. When co-workers tell me a 'funny' story, I always laugh and then say, "That's funny." I'm tired of hearing 'funny' come out of my mouth, but can't seem to stop myself before it plops out.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

A man came in the office last week looking for the Assessor's office. Once upon a time it was in the courthouse, but now it is in the annex building. The girl at the desk told him the annex building was 'kitty-cornered' across the street, which sounded correct to me, but obviously not to the man. He asked, "How do you spell that?" The girl didn't know, so he picked on me and the other girl in the office. We had no idea. He says, "It is spelled
c-a-t-e-r-c-o-r-n-e-r-e-d." I didn't dispute his obvious knowledge, but as soon as he left, I pulled up Google to prove to myself kitty-cornered was proper. What did I find out? I was wrong and he was correct. Did you know there is a Gunsmoke episode titled, Kitty Cornered?

Rubbish Tuesday #10

So today's rubbish is a collection of finds from a drive down The River Road. It was a hot day and Hubs had to work. I think it's great Home Depot hires retired people, but poor Hubs rarely ever gets a day off on a weekend and I rarely get a day off during the week. Anyway, since Hubs wasn't home it was a perfect day for a ramble.
I found a corn crib that looks a lot like the one by Bro O's house, only the top has a higher peak on this one.
This old house had some goodies stowed on the front porch. An old school desk and a table, along with some assorted pots and pans. Then there is the not quite as old broom. This house is not that far from Greenup, so I'm wondering if the desk came out of the Greenup school which was torn down several years ago. The desk looks like some I had back in the day.
Not sure what this is. It isn't far from the river. Looks like some type of water pipes???
Peeking out over a corn field, was this top portion of an old barn. The corn is supposed to be knee high by the 4th of July, but this corn is way taller than that. It was a good year for planting.
An old outhouse that appears to have had some TLC over the years.
And lastly, an old mailbox.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will join in the fun.

the Bird D'pot

Saturday night, date night at the garden. Woo Hoo! Excitement! I haven't been able to see many variety of birds so far this year, so on this night I was expecting more of the same. Nothing! However, I was pleasantly surprised. I was able to add a few pictures to my collection of really bad bird shots.
There is a bridge where we often see a blue heron, so we stop on the bridge and look closely to make sure he isn't hiding in the shadows like he is known to do. He wasn't there. As we prepared to drive on, I happened to look up and saw Mr. Baltimore Oriole watching us from his perch high up in the top of a tree.

We saw several indigo buntings, but they didn't pause long enough for a picture. We also saw 4 Goldfinches. I did get some really bad shots of them through the fantastically filthy truck windshield. They are sad excuses for pictures, but will post them later anyway.
As we pulled into the driveway and drove around back of Bro O's house, I saw this Cardinale inspecting the backhoe. Wonder what he needed to dig up ormaybe he was looking to uproot a tree due to feud with neighbors. Anyway, this is another shot through the dirty windshield. He flew before I could get out of the truck.
Then there was the usual red-winged blackbird—scolding me for being near their nest. I was about to put my camera back in the truck and go help Hubs pick zucchini when Hubs said, "Stand still and look over there." I followed his finger and saw...
... Mr. Heron trying to hide on the far side of the pond. Shockingly, he stayed put while I took about 100 really bad shots with my poor excuse for a zoom. After deciding I had enough poor photos, I wandered over to the garden and helped Hubs.
Since Mr. Heron was still there, I decided to try sneaking a little closer. My slow, steady footsteps gave me this shot. I turned my attention to the view of an elderberry bush and the grain bin. I moved the auto setting to landscape and took the shot. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mr. Heron taking off. I whipped my camera around and got this...
...a really bad shot of Mr. Heron flying away. I almost wish I had just watched him in real life instead of through the camera.

Hare, Foot, and a Fly

When we got to the garden last week, we saw this rabbit giving us the eye.
He looks guilty, don't you think? When I took the picture I thought we only had one cute little rabbit looking for a garden snack. When I uploaded pictures to the computer I saw another pesky rabbit peeking out of the weeds. Little nibblers!
We also found evidence of another intruder. Mr. Raccoon was long gone, but he left easily identifiable footprints.
While Hubs runs the tiller, I get to scour the area for photo ops. I found this Damsel Fly resting on a leaf...
...and this Dragonfly hanging out on a weed next to the pond.

Reflection and Reflective

This is yet another shot of Bro O's pond. My go to place for reflections. On this particular evening, it was cooling down. It was a nice evening for gardening.

Linking to Weekend Reflections

1. Somewhere between 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. last Saturday morning, we had an uninvited visitor. Someone kicked in our front screen door and tried to shoulder his way inside the house. I called 9-1-1. Thankfully the police responded within 3 minutes, before he got inside. The Sheriff's Department is 1/2 mile away.  It turns out he was probably just a very drunk guy who lost his way after a party next door, but we didn't know that at the time. It was a very scary experience.

2. It's been a long week for a short one. I'm supposed to have today off, but due to too much work, will be spending the afternoon in the office. We had our 4th of July celebration last weekend. Four of my five grands came for the fireworks. Fergus was extremely happy to see them. He seems to have a special love for the littlest one. Not a good shot in the evening light with lots of movement. But it's the only one I have where you can't see his face. Can you see the love? Those two are on the move constantly when they are together.
3. Dogs and Firworks. My beloved dog, Willie, was terrified of fireworks. I couldn't have him outside, so I would give the poor boy a vet-approved tranquilizer and leave him inside the house where he vibrated in the bathtub until his food lady came to rescue him. Fergus, had a totally different reaction. I could tell he was a bit concerned as to what was going on, since he backed up against my legs and stayed there, but he watched the whole show. I'm one happy food lady. Thanks Anni for the story about your dog. I leashed Fergus, just in case.

4. I decided not to take any pictures of fireworks this year. After all, how many pictures of fireworks do you really need anyway? Usually I'm messing with the camera or cameras and only see the show through the viewfinder. This time I ooed and ahhed with everyone else.

5. Hubs has to work this holiday weekend, so after I get back from the office, I'm going to spend time with Fergus. He has been sorely neglected this week. We will go for walks, toss his favorite ball, and throw frisbees until he hasn't any breath left, or I keel over—whichever comes first. I'm betting on the latter.

Happy 4th!

Good Fences

I posted a picture of this fence by the covered bridge before, but it was evening and coming a storm.
Everyone thought the fence was purple, so thought I would post it again in better light. See, not purple.
This is a fence around the observation deck at the same covered bridge.
This one is a bit more like a Rubbish fence. Looks like it needs a lot of TLC.
One of the more common fences around here.

And now for the Podge...

1.  Speaking of 180...when was the last time you 'did a 180' on something?

With regard to decisions, I can't think of the last time. I normally stand by my initial reaction. However, when it comes to taking pictures while driving. I do 180s all the time.

2. It's Independence Week in the US of A! What's your favorite thing about America right this very minute? Favorites only! Let's hear what you love about America.

Spacious skies, amber waves of grain, purple mountain majesties, and those fruited plains.

If you're playing along today, and you're not an American but have been to America, what do/did you like best about this country? If you've never been to America, do you have any desire to visit? What's the number one thing you'd like to see?

N/A

3. Stars or stripes? Red, white, or blue? Watermelon, homemade vanilla ice cream, or blueberry pie?

The stars at night are big and bright! Oops guess I lived in Texas too long.  Blue as in my daughter's and my son's eyes. Watermelon, but would readily enjoy my share of the other two.

4. When did you last see stars, figuratively speaking?

I equate 'seeing stars' with injuries, so guess it was 3 years ago when I fell down the steps and broke both ankles.

5.  'Clear as a bell', 'with bells on',  'lots of bells and whistles', 'saved by the bell'...which phrase 'rings' truest for you lately?  Have you ever seen The Liberty Bell?

I have seen the Liberty Bell. I actually used the phrase "with bells on" yesterday. Hubs asked if I was going with him to work in the garden. I responded, "of course, with bells on!" Now go back and read it with a heavy dose of sarcasm.

6. Are you caught up in World Cup fever? Have you watched a lot or a little or none at all?

At first, yes. Now, not so much.

7. Bid farewell to June in 10 words or less.

Goodbye June. See you next year.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

So, I got to thinking about the word HODGEPODGE. Does anyone remember Orthography? Okay, so I'm aging myself. It's the study of language. It was one of my favorite subjects in Junior High. Anyway I looked up hodge which means "an English Rustic or farm laborer" and thenI looked up podge which means "a short fat person". Hmm Hodgepodge, a short fat farmer? No, when you stick the two words together, you get "a mixture of different things".  Okay, so my brain is a little skewed in its thinking sometimes. But, hey that was my random thought.

Rubbish Tuesday #9

Our local town had their fireworks display Saturday night. Daughter and family always come down and watch with us. I was on my way to the nearest Dollar Store to look for a festive tablecloth for outside when I saw a likely candidate for Rubbish Tuesday.
I saw this wheel leaning up against a tree at the edge of a lawn. The building in the background is an old log cabin that was once an antique store. Sadly, it is no longer in business.
I didn't find a tablecloth, so took a drive out past the covered bridge in hopes of a colorful bird landing in front of my camera lens. No luck there, but I did see this old grain wagon rusting away at the edge of a field. I remember playing in the soybeans in a wagon just like this one, only it was still orange.
Up  a hill from the wagon, I spied this old barn. It wasn't a productive errand, but it was a productive drive home.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will join in the fun.

The Bird D'Pot

So why is it the only birds I can get a halfway decent picture of are red-winged blackbirds! I guess it's because they don't mind getting close enough to yell at me. Here she is, at it again!

This same evening, I saw a Scarlett Tanager in the mulberry tree, but of course, no proof!
